"IWM is partially government-funded but that money does not cover everything we need. We use sponsorship and donations to sustain our ambitious programs where we can but are constantly looking for ways to reduce our outgoings. We were extremely pleased with the substantial reduction CVS achieved for us on our business rates. This extra money we will now have can be poured back into exciting new projects giving the community another glimpse into the past. I was impressed by CVS’ professional approach to the rates appeals process and how they dealt with the unusual case of our warship."

Kirsty Harrison, Facilities Manager, Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum is a family of five museums: IWM London, IWM North in Trafford, Greater Manchester, IWM Duxford near Cambridge, the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall, London and the historic ship HMS Belfast, moored in the Pool of London on the River Thames. CVS was instructed to appeal the rates on its London and Cambridge sites including the famous warship itself, HMS Belfast.

Results

CVS’ Surveyor Philip Emerick undertook a thorough assessment of the structure and insides of IWM sites to determine where inaccuracies may have caused high rates bills. After compiling a complex and compelling case, an appeal was submitted for both land and water based properties. Significant reductions have been achieved across three sites to date and CVS are continuing to work for Imperial War Museum.

CVS Comment:

"This was one of the most complex and unusual cases we have seen as one of the properties we appealed was afloat. However, after assessing the paperwork and inspecting the premises, it was clear that some incorrect information was being used to calculate the rates on both buildings and ships. I am very satisfied with the result we achieved for IWM."
